An Alevi cultural center in German town of Mülheim was attacked by an ultranationalist group which sprayed insulting message and a red cross on the walls of it.

“Blow out the candles, you dogs,” read a sentence in red paint marked near the door of the center. A cross was also spotted on the door.

Even though the message was signed by Ottoman Hearts, a statement from the nationalist group denied any involvement on Tuesday.

The phrase “mum söndü” [The candle went out”] refers to a controversial accusation about a holy moment of an Alevi ritual during which 12 candles were doused with water. While some link the ritual with sexual activities, most of Alevi communities say it is a botched argument by Sunnis to demean Alevis.
