Five years into one of the greatest purges known to history, the Turkish government’s cleansing of the state institutions is continuing with people from all walks of life find themselves being hunted down and taken into custody over trumped-up terrorism charges.
Since the beginning of the purge in the aftermath of the coup attempt in July 15, 2016, over 125,000 public officials were dismissed from their jobs. Among those are police officers, military officers, teachers, doctors, diplomats and many other sectors. Additionally, the Turkish gov’t shut down a total of 179 media organization, including TVs and national newspapers. At least 6000 academics were fired from their posts at the state universities across Turkey.
The Euronews portal also reported that over 600,000 people have so far been investigated over alleged links to the Gulen group, which the Turkish government accuses of masterminding the coup attempt. The group denies any involvement.
Also, 2,761 associations have been closed over alleged terror links.
At least 6,021 academics lost their jobs since July 15
Since July 15, 2016 coup attempt, a total of 6021 academics were dismissed by gov’t decrees No. 672/673/674 issued on Sept. 1, 2016, No.675/676 issued on Oct. 29, 2016, No. 677/678 issued on Nov. 22, 2016, No.679/680/681 issued on Jan. 6, 2017, No.686/687 issued on Feb. 7, 2017, No.689 issued on April 29, No.692 issued on July 14, 2017, No.693/694 issued on August 25, 2017. Also, immediately after the failed putsch, the Turkish government passed a decree ordering the closure of 15 universities and 800 student dorms across Turkey. The shutting down of the universities has left 61,382 students in academic limbo.
At least 319 journalists were arrested to date
According to the data compiled from PEN International, Platform for Independent Journalism (P24), Journalists’ Union of Turkey (TGS), and Bianet, at least 319 journalists were arrested on terror charges to date. Click here for the full list: https://turkeypurge.com/journalism-in-jail.

600K civilians have been investigated
According to an official statement by the Turkish Justice Minister early in 2019, some 500k civilians were investigated over terror and coup accusations. As of today, this number has reached at least 600k, according to the Euronews portal.
