37 Air Force Academy cadets who were situated by their commanders on İstanbul’s Bosporus Bridge on the night of the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, have been sentenced to life in prison over coup charges.

The cadets were convicted of “attempting to change the constitutional order and overthrow the government and Parliament”

Turkey experienced a military coup attempt on July 15, 2016 that killed over 240 people and wounded more than a thousand others.

On the night of the attempt, a group of military cadets were situated on the Bosporus Bridge which became the scene of a confrontation between soldiers trying to overthrow the government, and a group of supporters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The crowds confronted the cades during the standoff, and were fired upon.

By dawn, the cadets had begun to falter and police moved in with a water cannon to disperse them. The cadets surrendered to police, yet the crowd attacked them after they laid down their arms.

Mehtap Tekin, sister of Murat Tekin, a military cadet whose throat was slit by a group of civilians on the night of the attempt, has recently released a video of the cadet’s final moments.

The graphic video footage shows the moment Murat lying on the Bosporus Bridge in a pool of blood while tens of people are cursing and kicking his body because of his alleged involvement in the attempt.

“Watch this. I can’t,” the grieving sister tweeted.
