Abdullah Ece, 73-year-old imprisoned Kurdish man, died of COVID-19 in İzmir’s Buca prison, the Bold news portal reported.

Ece reportedly contracted COVID-19 for the first time on April 5. He was eventually transferred to a state hospital where he died from complications of COVID-19.

He was laid to rest in his hometown of Şırnak’s Güçlükonak district.

The rapidly spreading disease has presented greater concerns in Turkey’s prisons, which were already notorious for human rights abuses, overcrowding and unsanitary conditions before the pandemic. The death of those political prisoners revealed once more how the Turkish government puts their health in immediate danger.
