A private school affiliated with the Gulen movement in the southern province of Kahramanmaraş has been turned into a religious vocational schools known as “İmam-hatip” high schools.

Turkish authorities affiliated with the Kahramanmaraş Governor’s Office hanged a banner on the building, which reads; “Dring the 2016-2017 school year, İmam-Hatip secondary school will be operating in this building.” The school was named as “15 Temmuz Şehitleri İmam-Hatip Ortaokulu,” in dedication to the civilians killed while trying to avert the failed coup attempt on the night of July 15.

This is not the first time a Gülen affiliated science school turned into an İmam-hatip. In a video footage released on social media last week, Turkish authorities are seen turning a school in Van province into a religious school.

Gulenist schools in the country are best known for their success at international science olympics. The Turkish gov’t shut down over 1,600 private education institutions allegedly linked to the Gülen movement, as the massive crackdown continues on the followers of the movement since the July 15 coup attempt.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has accussed the Gülen movement of being behind the coup attempt and demanded extradition of Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen from the US. Thousands of public servants, judges, prosecutors and journalists were detained by the Turkish police for allegedly having links to the Gülen movement.
