The upcoming arts festival in Ovacik district in Turkey’s Tunceli province has been banned under post-coup emergency rule.

Ovacik is the only district in Turkey where the mayor was elected under the Turkish Communist Party (TKP) ticket.

“Hello friends, the 1st International Ovacik Arts Days, which we have been working for long to organize was denied permission by the administrative authorities in the district and the province over emergency rule, security, etc,” Ovacik municipality said in a statement on its Facebook account on Friday.

Turkey announced State of Emergency a week after the July 15, 2016 coup attempt and it has extended the emergency rule for four times since then. Critics argue that the government has been using the anti-coup turmoil for its own political interests.

The municipality was supposed to host workshops on music, sociology, sculptures, photography and philosophy, during the festival, scheduled to take place between July 24-30.
