Cihan Erdal, 32-year-old Turkish citizen and a PhD candidate at Canada’s Carleton University, has been held in a prison in Turkey since late 2020 for “inciting terror and violence.”
According to the CBC News, Erdal was arrested in September of last year during his visit to Turkey for inciting violence with two social media posts he sent in 2014, when he was a member of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP).
In April 2021, Erdal was reportedly denied bail by a Turkish court.
Speaking to the news portal, Erdal’s spouse, Ömer Ongun said: “It’s scary. It’s shocking because you always question the rule of law. You really question if this is really a fair trial at the moment.”
