A Kırşehir court has ruled for continuation of imprisonment of Hakan Kanat, a 40-year-old Turkish teacher with stage 3 thyroid cancer.
According to the Turkish media, Kanat has been in prison since July 24, 2016. In 2018, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for having worked at a private student dormitory linked to the Gülen group, which the Turkish government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt in July 2016. The group denies any involvement.
However, the Supreme Court of Appeals overturned his sentence, and Kanat’s retrial started on November 2, 2021.
Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on followers of the Gulen group under the pretext of an anti-coup fight as a result of which more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 50,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
