President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has appointed Prof. Dr. Mehmed Özkan as the new rector of Istanbul’s prestigious Boğaziçi University, even though university academics elected Prof. Dr. Gülay Barbarosoğlu as rector four months ago.

Erdoğan selected Özkan from among three names recommended by the Higher Education Board (YÖK), according to a statement on presidential website on Saturday.

Özkan, who is a lecturer at the university’s biomedical engineering department, was not among the candidates for rectorship elections in July.

The AKP government issued two decrees earlier this month, which among other things canceled the intra-university elections that used to be held to elect university rectors. The university rectors will be appointed directly by the president from now on.

Last week, academics from Boğaziçi University, have called on the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government to annul the controversial government decree.
