Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s guard detail is reported to have roughed up İzmir’s Kemalpaşa Mayor Arif Uğurlu, a municipal councilor Bünyamin Demir and Professor Behzat Özkan, last week.
Erdoğan as well as the Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım attended a ceremony to inaugurate a newly constructed dairy plant in İzmir on Dec. 23.
While officials rushed into the İzmir’s Adnan Menderes Airport to welcome Erdoğan, the president’s bodyguards battered Uğurlu, Kemalpaşa mayor elected on the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) tickets, after pinning him against the wall, Fatih Yapar, a columnist at local Ege’de Sonsöz media outlet said.
A councilor at İzmir Municipality, Demir was also attacked by Erdoğan’s guards who forced him into a washroom after a brawl.
Later in the day, the guards also attacked Professor Behzat Özkan, also the general secretary of the state-run Turkish Public Hospitals Institution Association’s (TKHK) İzmir branch.
Özkan had his nose broken, Yapar said.
