Under pre-trial arrest since Apr 1, 2017, M.C., a factory worker from Kayseri was sentenced to 6 years plus 3 months in prison on accusation of membership to a terrorist organization on Thursday.

The reason for the conviction, Kayseri 4. Heavy Penal Court said, M.C.’s use of ByLock, a controversial mobile app that Turkish authorities claim to be the top communication tool among Gülen movement supporters.

M.C. worked as a factory worker at Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone until he was arrested.

Turkish government accuses Gülen movement of leading the July 15, 2016 coup attempt and considers the group a terrorist organzation although the latter denies involvement.

Tens of thousands of people including Taner Kılıc, the chairman of Amnesty International in Turkey have been imprisoned over ByLock use so far.

M.C. admitted that he had downloaded the app on his cell phone but added that he has never used it in any way.

Arrested on Apr 1, 2017, M.C. was given 6-years-and-3-months jail sentence on Thursday.
