The rector of Denizli’s Pamukkale University (PAU) between 2011 and 2016, Professor Dr. Huseyin Bagci has been put in pre-trial detention over his alleged links to the Gulen movement.

The government accuses the movement of masterminding the July 15, 2016 coup attempt while the latter denies any involvement.

Bagci, who is a genetic professor, was arrested on Wednesday.

He was earlier dismissed from his position as the rector over similar accusations.

Turkey has already detained over 120,000 people and arrested some 50,000 people, among them journalists, academics, judges, prosecutors, court personnel, police and military officers, businessmen and doctors, over their alleged ties to the movement.
