Ayşegül Jale Saraç, a Turkish professor and the former rector of the Diyarbakır-based Dicle University, has been sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison on charges of membership in a terrorist organization due to her alleged links to the Gülen group, the Hurriyet news website reported.
In addition to Saraç, former vice rector Professor Aytekin Sır was also sentenced to six years, three months in prison over similar charges.
In her defense Saraç said “those who testified against me are the people who ran against me in the rector election or who supported my rivals. Therefore, they may have testified due to a grudge against me,” she said.
The court, however, did not take her defense into consideration in its ruling.
Turkish government accuses Gulenists of masterminding the July 15, 2016 failed coup while the group denies involvement. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said at least 510,000 people have been detained over Gulen links since the summer of 2016.
