Turkish government has cancelled election of rectors by faculty members with the President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan becoming only authority to appoint rectors from among three professors proposed by the High Education Council (YÖK).

Two government decrees were released as part of Turkey’s post-coup emergency rule on Saturday.

According to the new regulation, the president is entitled to choose the rector from among three nominees proposed by YÖK.

Faculty members used to hold a pre-election for rectorate and present three most-favorable candidates for the president’s appointment.
