Former Zaman columnist Ali Ünal has joined the list of journalists arrested due to what the government says their links to July 15 coup attempt.

Police detained Ünal in Uşak’s Eşme district on August 14 and arrested him on August 16. Police also reportedly seized properties belonging to Ünal including the money he separated to cover the medical expenses of his disabled daughter.

According to P24 and DİSK Basın, a total of 77 journalists are currently behind bars in Turkey, 44 of them arrested after the July 15 alone.

Turkey survived a military coup attempt on July 15 which killed around 240 people and wounded more than a thousand others. Even before the intervention was yet to be rebuffed, the President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan along with the government officials accused the faith-based Gülen movement of masterminding the coup without an investigation.

Zaman was on the target of Turkish government even before the coup attempt over its ties to the movement.
