Muharrem Atmaca, a USA-based Turkish businessman who passed away on Friday, was denied a public funeral by the Turkish imams working at a Turkey-funded mosque in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City.
İmams reportedly refused to lead Atmaca’s memorial service on the grounds that he was a member of the Gulen group, which is accused by the Turkish govermnet of masterminding a coup attempt on July 15, 2016. The group denies any involvement.
According to the Gulen-linked TR724 news portal, the mosque, known as Mosque of Brooklyn Eyup Sultan, is funded by Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate’s (Diyanet).
The news portal also said that Atmaca had been living in the United States for over 40 years.
