Turkish Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen’s nephew, identified as S.G., was given 8 years and 9 months in prison on terror charges.
State-run Anadolu news agency said Thursday that S.G., under pretrial detention since Dec 2017, was convicted on charges of membership to an armed terror group.
Turkish government accuses Fethullah Gulen and his Hizmet movement for the July 15, 2016 failed coup while the group denies involvement. More than 160,000 people have passed through police custody, of which 90,000 were put in pre-trial detention since the summer of 2016.
Many relatives of the group’s self-exiled inspirational leader Fethullah Gulen were arrested while critics often criticize the government for a massive purge it is carrying out that violates the principle of individual criminal responsibility even before Gulen himself is convicted of accusations.
