Italian lawyer Barbara Spinelli was not allowed to enter Turkey as she was told to return to her country at Istanbul Airport on Friday.

According to Italian newspaper La Stampa Spinelli was expected to spend the night at the Istanbul Airport until she catches the next flight to the Italia.

Focused on human rights issues and the Kurdish minority in Turkey in particular, Spinelli was bound to attend a panel conference titled “The Judicial System in Turkey under the State of Emergency rule,” in Ankara on Jan. 14.

“A great connoisseur of the country, the Spinelli lawyer went to Turkey regularly, where he also participated as an observer at the last general elections of 2015,” La Stampa said.
