Devrim Ayık, an imprisoned journalist with advanced Crohn’s disease, has regularly been denied release from prison, according to the Yeni Yaşam newspaper.

Ayık also has permanent vision loss in one eye.

Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It causes inflammation of digestive tract, which can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition.

Ayık has been in the İzmir State prison. He is accused of having links to “terrorist organizations.”

According to a letter written by his mother, Dervim has been denied access to treatment in prison:

“My son being in jail, he is not being treated. The fact he cannot feed himself as prescribed by the dietician means he cannot be treated as needed and under the unhealthy and insufficient conditions in jail, Devrim’s condition worsens day after day. As sole treatment to delay the transformation of the illness into cancer, he receives two injections of Humira per week,” she said in the letter.
