Journalist Sinan Aygün has been sent to prison for “violating the confidentiality of the investigation” with a report he published on a child sexual abuse case in Bitlis, a city in eastern Turkey.
“I have surrendered to the prison to serve my sentence handed down for reporting a child sexual abuse. I hope the same for the rapists,” Aygül tweeted.
Aygül’s tweet referred to the recent release of a mother and stepfather who were accused of physical and sexual abuse as well as selling their children into non-consensual “sex” in the southern province of Antalya’s Finike district.
Known as the Elmalı Trial, the case began in May 2020, when the grandmother of two children, aged seven and 10, filed a legal case, claiming that her grandchildren were abused by their mother, their uncle and their stepfather in 2019.
