Efkan Bolaç, a lawyer representing fashion designer Barbaros Şansal, who was attacked by a mob at İstanbul Atatürk Airport and then arrested by a court on Tuesday, tweeted that Şansal was sent to İstanbul’s Silivri Prison, where most of Turkey’s political prisoners are jailed.
“Barbaros Şansal is in Silivri Prison No.9. I talked to him, he enjoys good health and is in good spirits. Says hi to those who are curious,” Bolaç tweeted on Tuesday.
Şansal was beaten up by a group of people who gathered on an airport tarmac in protest of a controversial video the designer posted on New Year’s Eve criticizing Turkish people attending New Year’s Eve celebrations despite problems in Turkey including mass detentions, corruption, rape, bribery and bigotry. “I won’t celebrate. Do you know what I’m gonna do? I will drink up all the drinks at this bar and home,” Şansal said in the video before adding: ”Drown in your shit, Turkey!”
Detained after landing in İstanbul, Şansal was arrested by an İstanbul court on Tuesday.
