A leaked video has revealed the critically wounded body of a Kurdish inmate in a vegetative state lying in a hospital room a day after Turkish authorities said he died of heart attack in İstanbul’s Silivri prison.

In the 6-second long footage, Ferhan Yılmaz, 25-year-old Kurdish youngster, is seen laying on a bed in what appears to be an intensive care room. His face looks heavily damaged and scarred.

“Who can say that this is just a heart attack? Ferhan Yılmaz was tortured to death. This footage is a proof,” said Dilek Aykan, a human rights activist.

On Tuesday, Turkish authorities told the media that the man had a heart attack. According to Mezopotamya news portal, Yılmaz was tortured to death by prison guards.

Turkish authorities also claimed that in addition to Yılmaz, Halil Kasan, another Kurdish youngster, committed suicide at Silivri prison on Tuesday.

Kasan was initially arrested by the Turkish authorities at age of 14 and has been in pre-trial detention ever since over alleged “terror” links.

According to the SOL newspaper Kasan, in one of his recent phone conversations with his family, said that Kurdish inmates were being encouraged to commit suicide by prison guards who systematically commit a series of human rights violations and crimes against detainees at the prison.

Since a failed coup attempt in 2016, there have been many cases of people who died in jail, some suspiciously, because they were denied crucial treatment or subjected to maltreatment or acts of torture. So far, at least 106 people died in Turkish prisons since July 2016, the Bold news portal reported.
