A Bursa man, identified only with his initials Ö.G., was briefly detained upon a complaint that he was wearing a ‘hero’ T-shirt, on Friday.
Bursa police detained Ö.G. following a false tip-off which reported him to police as wearing a hero T-shirt. Police stopped Ö.G. near Bursa’s touristic Koza Inn and interrogated him. When they found out that his T-shirt bears only the word ‘heart,’ he was released.
The T-shirts bearing the word “hero” have become a contentious issue when Gökhan Güçlü, one of the suspects on trial for an assassination attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the night of the July 15, 2016 failed coup, was thrown out of the courtroom for wearing a T-shirt bearing the word “hero” because it caused tension between the parties during the hearing. At least 40 people have been detained for wearing hero T-shirts since summer.
