Hakan Baş, an imprisoned history teacher, has entered a vegetative state as the result of brain damage related to complications from the Covid-19 virus, the Bold news portal reported.

46-year-old Baş had been held in İstanbul’s notorious Silivri prison for over for years over alleged links to Turkey’s Gulen group, which the government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt in 2016. The group denies any involvement.

He reportedly contracted Covid-19 virus at the prison on June 29.
