A Turkish woman from the city of Çanakkale committed suicide on Saturday, according to thepro-Kurdish HDP deputy Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu.
The HDP deputy said that it has not yet been confirmed whether the woman committed suicide or “fell off balcony.”
“I was informed that a woman named Halime, whose husband and father are in prison, committed suicide. It is not yet very clear if she committed suicide or fell off balcony. I hope this an act of desperation,” Gergerlioğlu said.
The woman’s father and husband have reportedly been held in prison over alleged Gulen links. There have been frequent cases of suicide among purge victims since the failed coup.
Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on followers of the movement under the pretext of an anti-coup fight, as a result of which more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 50,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
