Abdulvahit Tunçay, a former police officer who was diagnosed with pancreas cancer during his incarceration on terrorism charges, died a week after following his release from prison in late April 2021.
According to the Kronos news portal, Tunçay was charged with membership in the Gulen group, accused of masterminding a coup attempt in 2016. The group denies any involvement.
He was reportedly sentenced to 25 years in prison on terror and coup charges.
Following the coup attempt, he was fired from his job with a decree issued by the Turkish government.
