Strange traffic signs erected in Ferizli district of Sakarya province show that Turkish authorities know no bounds in dehumanisation of Fethullah Gülen, the Islamic scholar whom the government accuses of masterminding the July 15 coup attempt.
“Caution! Beware of FETÖ,” read the controversial warnings in reference to what even Turkey Purge does not understand. FETÖ is an abbreviation coined by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in order to describe the alleged network of Gülen within state institutions.
The statement of the mayor, Ahmet Soğuk even adds more absurdity into the status quo. Speaking to Doğan News Agency, Soğuk said the warnings were erected in certain spots that often see traffic accidents.
Ever since the government and Erdoğan accused Gülen Movement [which inspired from the teachings of Fethullah Gülen] of organizing the July 15 coup attempt, pro-government circles have voiced claims that the movement was behind recent unidentified murders across the country, the breakdown in peace process with Kurdish minority, Gezi protests and Turkish military’s bombing of 34 Kurdish civilians in Uludere district. Some analysts even argued that recent downing of Russian warplane by Turkish pilot was a plot by a member of Gulen Movement.
In an uprising against such discriminatory discourse, Deputy Prime Minister Tuğrul Türkeş acknowledged that the movement has being accused for each and every wrongdoing in Turkey, saying that witch-hunt is underway for sympathizers of the movement.
“When the shock absorber of your car is broken, they put blame on people with ties to FETO,” Türkeş said.
