Police have detained seven students who were part of a crowd that gathered in front of the Cumhuriyet daily’s İstanbul headquarters to protest the detention of 13 journalists on Monday.

Detention warrants were issued for 18 journalists from the newspaper, and police began to take them into custody one by one on Monday morning. Thirteen journalists including the daily’s Editor-in-Chief Murat Sabuncu have been detained so far.

The Cumhuriyet daily is facing an investigation over charges of helping the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the government-targeted Gülen movement.

Cumhuriyet reported on Monday that the seven students were detained while they were leaving the protest.
