A Kocaeli-based couple, identified with initials A.T. and A.T., were arrested along with their three kids near Greek border in Edirne province, on Wednesday.

The family was reportedly on their way to escape Turkey to Greece as they fear government persecution in the aftermath of the July 15, 2016 coup attempt.

Both A.T. and his wife were earlier dismissed from their jobs and have had outstanding arrest warrants as part of an investigation into the Gulen movement, which the government accuses of masterminding the coup attempt.

Edirne police, upon complaint, stopped a car in Üyüklütatar village in Edirne and took the family and two organizators into custody on Thursday.

More than 120,000 people have been detained and some 50,000 including academics, judges, doctors, teachers, lawyers, students, policemen and many from different backgrounds have been put in pre-trial detention since last summer.

Many tried to escape Turkey via illegal ways as the government cancelled their passports like thousands of others.
