An Australian university professor has been held in a Turkish prison for over five months, The Australian newspaper reported on Monday.

According to the daily, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is aware of the arrest of the dual Australian – Turkish academic, however; attempts to provide consular assistance have reportedly been frustrated by Turkish authorities.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade continues to seek to offer consular assistance to an Australian-Turkish dual-national academic … detained in Turkey,” a spokeswoman for Ms Bishop told the daily.
