A Turkish news portal on Friday started a series on the re-emergence of torture in Turkish prisons following a failed coup on July 15, based on the personal accounts of victims and their families.
Independent news portal TR724 published the statements of the family of teacher E.B., who was tortured in prison by the insertion of a bottle in his anus, for which he required surgery to repair a rupture in his intestines. The website noted that to prevent further harm to the victim and his family, they only used their initials.
The teacher E.B. was taken into custody in the wake of the July 15 abortive coup; his family was not notified of his whereabouts, nor did he have access to a lawyer. Finally, his family found records in a hospital for the surgery he underwent due to the insertion of a hard object in his anus.
It turned out later that despite the lack of any evidence of a crime, schoolteacher E.B. was forced to “confess” under detention and was threatened with harm to his family. Unable to withstand the torture with a bottle, he was eventually hospitalized.
Despite the clear evidence of torture, doctors were forced to issue a medical report starting that the victim was not harmed at all.
While E.B. is still imprisoned with serious health issues, his family is only able to see him every other week behind a glass window.
According to the information TR724 obtained, the initials of the police officers at the Antalya Anti-organized Crime Unit who tortured schoolteacher E.B. are as follows: C.T., R.A.T., B.S.Y., M.T.G., T.K..
