Turkish journalist Hakan Aygün was sent to prison on Friday over Twitter posts that “insults” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s call to raise funds to aid victims of the coronavirus epidemic.

According to BBC Türkçe, Aygün was jailed for “inciting hatred and hostility among people” with tweets that are in critical of Erdogan’s “insufficient” measures against the coronavirus outbreak in the country

Erdoğan on Monday launched the “National Solidarity Campaign” to collect donations to support the financially vulnerable segments of society.

Turkey had 23,934 confirmed cases of coronavirus as of Saturday, with an increase of 3,013 in the last 24 hours while the death toll grew by 76 to 501, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca has announced.
