An İstanbul prosecutor has launched an investigation into a Turkish actress who opposed the death penalty by tweeting about the “record number of rape incidents” in the Saudi Arabian city of Medina.
“If the death penalty was a solution, the lands of Medina would not break the record for rape incidents,” Berna Laçin tweeted on Tuesday.
In less than one hour, her tweet has been reteweeted by thousands of social media users.
According to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, the Anadolu Chief Prosecutor’s Office in Istanbul launched an investigation into the actress for “insulting people’s religious values.”
According to Amnesty International, in 2017, Saudi Arabia was the third most prolific user of the death penalty worldwide after China and Iran.
