US-based Turkish scholar Fethullah Gülen’s niece Emine Akay has been arrested in Turkey’s Balıkesir province as part of an investigation into the July 15 coup attempt probe.

Akay was initially detained in Balıkesir’s Edremit district on Sept 23 over her alleged ties to Gulen movement, of which the Turkish government accuses of masterminding the coup attempt.

She was sent to Burhaniye prison on Friday on charges of “being a member of criminal organization, fraud of public institutions and forgery on official documents.”
