A Turkish court has banned access to two international news websites, Germany’s state-run broadcaster Deutsche Welle and the US state-owned international multimedia broadcaster, VOA (Amerika’nın Sesi).
The court ruling came after two news outlets refused to obtain a broadcaster license in Turkey under a new law.
Deutsche Welle and VOA challenged RTÜK’s move and announced that they would appeal its decision and take legal action in court.
In 2019 Turkey revised its media regulations to allow RTÜK to supervise online broadcasts. Since the new regulations went into effect, various streaming platforms including Netflix and Amazon Prime have applied for and received licenses.
