A Turkish court has ruled to release Mehmet Ali Çelebi, a 70-year-old inmate with advanced leukemia, from prison following strong reactions from hundreds of social media users over the past several weeks.

According to Turkish journalist Sevinç Özarslan, Çelebi was released from Ankara’s Sincan Prison late on Wednesday.

The purge victim man was incarcerated over alleged membership to the Gulen group, accused of masterminding a coup attempt in 2016. The group denies any involvement.

In addition to leukemia, he also suffers from kidney failure and thus receives daily dialysis treatment.
