A Turkish court has ruled to release a 32-year-old Turkish citizen and a PhD candidate at Canada’s Carleton University after 265 days in prison on accusation of “inciting terror and violence.”

Cihan Erdal was sent to prison in Turkey in September 2020.

According to the CBC News, Erdal was arrested during his visit to Turkey for inciting violence with two social media posts he sent in 2014, when he was a member of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP).

In April 2021, Erdal was reportedly denied bail by a Turkish court.

Speaking to the news portal, Erdal’s spouse, Ömer Ongun said: “It’s scary. It’s shocking because you always question the rule of law. You really question if this is really a fair trial at the moment.”
