Turkish pop singer and songwriter Sıla Gençoğlu’s upcoming concerts have been canceled by Turkish authorities after she refused to attend an İstanbul rally on Aug 7 to protest the July 15 coup attempt.

Days before Turkish people gathered at a meeting venue in İstanbul’s Yenikapı district for a joint democracy rally to protest the coup attempt, Sıla announced in a written statement that she would not attend the meeting as she saw it nothing but a “show”.

“I am against coup but I am not going to be part of this show. I will not be there,” said Sıla.

Upon her statement, a criminal complaint filed against the singer. Authorities from the İBB and Kayseri Municipality and Bursa Municipality announced on Thursday that Sıla’s upcoming concerts have been canceled due to her statement and refusal to attend the rally.

The rally was a rare event in which the leaders of different political parties took the stage upon an invitation by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, leaving aside their political differences.
