A staff member in US consulate in Istanbul, known as M.T., was arrested on charges of military and political espionage against Turkish government, on Monday.

M.T., a communications officer at the consulate was taken into custody on Sunday and put in pretrial detention on Wednesday.

According to the investigation, M.T. allegedly had regular phone calls before corruption investigations went public Dec. 17-25, 2013 with then-İstanbul Deputy Public Prosecutor Zekeriya Öz and the chiefs of police in charge of the probes, Turkish Minute reported.

The prosecutors and police officers involved in corruption investigations were earlier sacked from their jobs and most of them were arrested.
