A newly-released commercial by the government-seized furniture maker, Bellona features Nur Viral, a TV personality and the wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s adviser Cemil Ertem.

Kayseri-based Boydak Holding and its subsidiaries including Bellona were seized by the state-run  Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) in Sept, 2016. Active in a number of sectors, including energy, furniture and banking with 38 subsidiary companies, the congolomerate has an annual turnover of more than TL 6 billion ($  1 billion) and employs over 13,000 people.

Media reported Aug 16 that Bellona did not renew its contract with Sevval Sam, singer and actress critical of the government, and agreed to feature Viral in its commercials instead.

Nearly 1,000 companies with a total value of $12 billion in assets have been seized and then transferred to TMSF since Turkey’s July 15, 2016 failed coup attempt. The companies in question were mostly targeted as part of the government crackdown against the Gulen movement.

The government blames the Gulen movement for the July 15, 2016 coup attempt while the group denies any role.
