A private school affiliated with the Gulen movement in the eastern province of Van has been turned into a religious vocational schools known as “İmam-hatip” high schools.
In a video footage released on social media on Sunday, Turkish authorities affiliated with the Van Governor’s Office are seen carrying a banner of the religious vocational school that reads “15 Temmuz Şehitleri İmam-Hatip Ortaokulu,” in dedication to the civilians killed while trying to avert the failed coup attempt on the night of July 15.
Gulenist schools in the country are best known for their success at international science olympics. The Turkish gov’t shut down over 1,600 private education institutions allegedly linked to the Gülen movement, as the massive crackdown continues on the followers of the movement since the July 15 coup attempt.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has accussed the Gülen movement of being behind the coup attempt and demanded extradition of Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen from the US. Thousands of public servants, judges, prosecutors and journalists were detained by the Turkish police for allegedly having links to the Gülen movement.
