Law enforcement detained at least 36 people in Sapatan village in Turkey’s Kurdish eastern province of Hakkari on Sunday with pro-Kurdish Dihaber news portal claiming that some villagers were subjected to torture under custody.
Police and gendarmerie carried out a joint operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’s Party (PKK) in Sapatan where one special operation unit police was killed. Entrance and exit to/from the village was banned and 36 villagers were taken under custody as part of the operation.
While 20 of those detained were released after police interrogation, 16 still remain under custody.
Dihaber said all 36 were tortured just before they were taken under custody.
