A group of some 200 villagers have been detained by police for blocking a developer from cutting several 10-year old pine trees in Manisa’s Yunusemre district, Birgün daily reported.

The villagers reportedly started camping out to save the pine trees from clear-cut by the Housing Development Administration of Turkey (TOKI). Following a 10-hour long vigil around the trees, the protestors were forcefully removed from the site by police and detained for preventing public authorities from conducting their duties.

“We’re going to maintain this until we they decide not to harm our trees. We do not want any more buildings. We want out trees to live a long life. We are here to her arrested if necessary,” villagers told Turkish media.
