Cigdem Bocek, 27, and her husband Servet, 36, arrived in Istanbul on Sunday, November 9. They were staying at a hotel in the city’s Fatih district with their two children, Masal, 3, and Kadir Muhammet, 6.

They had to switch hotels after two other tourists were taken to the hospital with suspected poisoning. Those tourists, who were treated for nausea and vomiting, are now out of danger. Following the incident, the building was evacuated and sealed.

However, the family — German citizens from Hamburg — were taken to the hospital with nausea and vomiting, according to the Mirror.

After receiving initial treatment, they were discharged. But when they returned to the hotel, Cigdem and Servet found their daughter Masal lying motionless, and the family was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

Despite doctors’ best efforts, neither Masal nor her brother Kadir could be saved.

Four people from the establishments where the Bocek family had eaten were taken into custody, along with the hotel owner and the owner and an employee of a pest control company.

Pest control had recently been carried out in a ground-floor room at the hotel, and investigators are now examining the chemicals that were used.

Cigdem and her children were laid to rest in Bolvadin, Afyonkarahisar Province, over the weekend.

Servet’s uncle, Recep Yilmaz, told local media: “Cigdem asked about her husband and children, and they told her they were ‘fine’.

“Two hours later, they said, ‘Our condolences.’”

“Cigdem then passed away. My nephew is still fighting for his life. The guilty must be punished.”
