The theater performance about a fictional dictator by outspoken actor Baris Atay was banned in Kocaeli’s central district of Izmit, the latest of such attempts against the critical monologue.

“Just a Dictator” is a monologue performed by Atay about the head of an unspecified country and his rise to power amid angry yet little to intimidate protests.

In a statement on Jan 24, the district governor’s office said the play was banned in Izmit.

First performed in 2015, the play was earlier banned in many other cities including Van, Antalya, Burdur, Denizli, Uşak, Artvin, Manisa and Konya.
