Gianluca Costantini, a free speech activist and a cartoonist, has drawn a cartoon of Mümtaz’er Türköne, a Turkish political scientist who has been in prison in Turkey over the past three years, caling on the Turkish government to free him as soon as possible.

The cartoon was published on August 6, 2019.

Mr. Türköne, who used to work for the now-closed Zaman daily, which was shut down by the government in the aftermath of the coup attempt due to its links to the Gülen movement, has been behind bars for three years, two months.

The Turkish government accuses the Gülen movement of masterminding the failed coup on July 15, 2016 and labels it a “terrorist organization,” although the movement denies involvement in the coup attempt or any terrorist activity.
