A Kurdish prisoner named Vedat Çem Erkmen took his own life on Sunday at an F Type prison in Tekirdağ province, according to Turkish authorities.

Erkmen was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole over alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

A lawyer representing Erkmen told the ANF news agency that Vedat was placed in solitary confinement a few days ago. “They moved him because they said that ‘he was not safe’. We believe he was murdered. Why should he commit a suicide?” he said.
