Güven Bozkurt, a purge-victim Turkish teacher, is feared to have drowned in the Maritsa River while trying to flee to Greece.

According to a Turkish human rights activist, Güven Bozkurt went missing on January 12 and his last point of contact was Orestias, a small town in the province of Evros, Greece.

Bozkurt was fired from his job with a government decree in the aftermath of a coup attempt in July 15, 2016. He was accused of having links to the Gulen group, accused by the government of masterminding the attempt.

Thousands of people have fled Turkey since the failed coup due to a massive witch-hunt carried out by the Turkish government against alleged members of the Gülen group, inspired by US-based Turkish Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen. Many have tried to illegally flee Turkey as the government had canceled the passports of thousands of people.
