Tunahan Gözlügöl, a student from Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ), has been sentenced to 8 years and 22 days in prison for “insulting” rector Mustafa Verşan Kök in a tweet he posted last month.

According to the Yol Haber news portal, Gözlügöl criticized the university management over a construction project at the campus. His tweets, however, were reportedly considered an insult to the rector himself.

Turkey’s prestigious ODTU is widely known with anti-government stance, with its students and professors often face prison terms for “insulting” Presdient Tayyip Erdogan and other state officials.
