An Elazig teacher identified as Cemal Gürer has died of cancer, according to online news portal Akfifhaber.

Jailed over his links to the Gulen movement, Gürer was in pre-trial detention for some time, Aktifhaber said Wednesday.

“His cancer problem relapsed while in prison and Gurer lacked adequate treatment in prison,” the news outlet said.

Turkish government blames Gulen movement for the July 15, 2016 failed coup while the latter denies involvement. More than 160,000 people passed through police custody over Gulen links since the summer of 2016.
